this image is of a collection of padlocks on the Ponte Vecchio covered bridge. they are locked to the railing around the statue of Benvenuto Cellini (he was an Italian goldsmith, sculptor, and painter). this tradition is said to have been introduced by the padlock shop owner at the end of the bridge. it is popular with love and lovers : by locking the padlock and throwing the key into the river, the two become eternally bonded.
